Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is not only an evidenced-based modality of therapy but also a mental model of the mind as having natural multiplicity. You may have already experienced this intuitively if you’ve ever said, “A part of me wants to do this [truly, fill in the blank with whatever idea that part of you has], but another part of me wants to do this [which might be the first part’s seemingly opposite inclination].”
Like a family system has multiple individual members of a family (all of whom have different relationships with one another), within IFS, we understand that each person is an entire system with individual parts (or subpersonalities) comprising the system, along with a core Self that is naturally able to extend compassion and curiosity toward each part of us, including those parts of us we may feel as though we struggle with accepting the most.
Internal Family Systems is the most respectful, compassionate modality of therapy I have personally experienced, not only from my own IFS therapy but also from the IFS consultation I receive and from my trainings with the Internal Family Systems Institute. IFS therapy emphasizes a non-pathologizing approach to understanding ourselves, as well as an implicit trust in each person’s ability to heal.
I received my Level 1 and Level 2 trainings from the Internal Family Systems Institute. I also participated in an additional Level 2 training from Central Connecticut State University. I continue to participate in training, consultation, my own IFS therapy, and my own outside growth opportunities within IFS. If you are interested in receiving IFS therapy or consultation, I would love to connect with you.
